Jaclyn DecologeroJaclyn Decologero, a criminal justice major, forensic science minor from North Andover, Mass., was selected by Dr. Steven DiSalvo to receive the college's Presidential Leadership Award and to be named a Newman Civic Fellow by the national office of Campus Compact.

Campus Compact is a national coalition of more than 1,000 college and university presidents-representing some 6 million students-who are committed to improving community life and educating students for civic and social responsibility. The Newman Civic Fellow Awards recognize college student leaders who work to find solutions for challenges facing their communities.

Decologero was cited by Dr. DiSalvo as a "fearless advocate for others." As a first semester freshman, she volunteered at a federal prison halfway house. Her passion and dependability led the Meelia Center for Community Engagement to offer her the role of student coordinator of criminal justice affiliates.

She joined the Meelia Center's College Access team in September and has helped the program develop an individualized approach for the high school participants. Because of her involvement, a number of her students will be attending college this fall and the program is stronger going forward.

Decologero will receive her award on April 8 at an event recognizing and celebrating service on college campuses across the state.
