Saint Anselm College executive vice president Suzanne Mellon has been named the next president of Carlow University in Pennsylvania.Father Jonathan DeFelice, O.S.B., president of Saint Anselm College announced on June 7 that executive vice president Suzanne K. Mellon, Ph.D., R.N., has been named the 10th president of Carlow University in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Dr. Mellon has served as the college's chief operating officer and second in command to Father Jonathan DeFelice, president of Saint Anselm , since 2009. In that position she has been responsible for all areas of the college, including academic affairs, advancement, finance, marketing, enrollment, student affairs, athletics, and other administrative areas.

"I am delighted that Suzanne has been chosen to lead one of our American Catholic universities and, at the same time, I am sorry that Saint Anselm College will lose the extraordinary leadership she has provided since her arrival in 2009" said Father Jonathan.

Under Dr. Mellon's leadership, the college created and implemented it's five year strategic plan, Vision 2015: Looking Within - Reaching Beyond, which includes the five major pillars: creating educational distinction, developing ethical leaders for a global society, partnering for the future, advancing the college's reputation and reach, and stewarding and extending resources. Among the plan's many successes is a significant growth in revenue from foundations and grants, as well as the launch of the college's hybrid-online RN to BSN Program.

"I've really enjoyed my time here. The entire community, from Father Jonathan and the monastic community to the senior leadership team, faculty, staff, and students, to the board of trustees, was so welcoming and wonderful to work with," said Dr. Mellon.

"I've found people with a real passion for Catholic, higher education at Saint Anselm College, who are willing to build on the college's strong tradition for excellence and its Benedictine mission."

Next Steps

Dr. Mellon begins her presidency at Carlow on July 15, and says she looks forward to working with the mission of the Sisters of Mercy.

Saint Anselm College's incoming president, Dr. Steven DiSalvo indicated he will begin a national search for the college's second highest leadership position later this summer. Dr. DiSalvo begins his tenure at Saint Anselm on July 15.

Dr. Mellon's Background

Prior to her tenure at Saint Anselm, Dr. Mellon held faculty and administrative positions at the University of Detroit Mercy and Wayne State University.

She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in nursing, a master's degree from the Ohio State University, and a Ph.D. from Wayne State University. She is a graduate of the Institute for Management and Leadership in Education (MLE) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
