Peter Flaherty HeadshotThe New Hampshire Institute of Politics & Political Library at Saint Anselm College is pleased to announce that Peter Flaherty, former advisor to Mitt Romney's 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns, will join the Institute as a Senior Fellow.

Flaherty is the cofounder and Principal of The Shawmut Group, a public affairs and political strategy consulting firm. He served as national deputy campaign manager for Mitt Romney's 2008 campaign and senior advisor for strategy for his 2012 campaign. He counseled Governor Romney on issues ranging from judicial nominations to bioethics, and advised him on debate preparation for close to 50 presidential debates.

He also served as a senior advisor for strategy and debate preparation to United States Senator Scott Brown during his 2014 campaign for United States Senate.

Before delving into national politics, Flaherty served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office in Boston. He also served in the administration of Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and Lt. Governor Kerry Healey. His roles included Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Romney, Chief of Staff to Lt. Governor Healey, and Chief of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs.

He currently serves as a trustee on the Board of New England Law Boston, and is Vice President of the Board of the Suffolk County Children's Advocacy Center.

As a Senior Fellow, Flaherty will offer seminars for Saint Anselm College students about modern presidential campaigns, covering topics such as debate preparation, messaging and strategy, and faith and politics.

David Axelrod, former Senior Advisor to President Obama and current Director of The University of Chicago Institute of Politics, says, "While we come from different parties, I hold up Peter Flaherty as a shining example of politics at its best. He is in the arena because he loves his country, cares about people and sees politics as a calling. And he is very skilled at it. The students at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics have much to learn from his experience and his example."

Former New Hampshire Governor John H. Sununu also expressed his support of Flaherty's role as a Senior Fellow. "Peter Flaherty is an exciting addition to the New Hampshire Institute of Politics," he says. "The New Hampshire IOP has become a great asset to the state of New Hampshire and the cornerstone of academic political thought, and Peter Flaherty is one of the sharpest conservative minds in the political campaign strategy and policy arena."
