The Saint Anselm College community gathered on Friday, Aug. 1, to mark the beginning of the college’s 125th anniversary yearQuasquicentennial: adjective-pertaining to or marking a period of 125 years; noun-a 125th anniversary.

Today, college faculty, staff, and alumni gathered to mark the beginning of a historic year in the life of the college--125 years ago, on Aug. 1, 1889 Saint Anselm College was founded.

In commemoration, a mass was held in the Abbey Church, followed by a reception, remarks by Abbot Mark Cooper, O.S.B., and reading of the College Charter by President Steven R. DiSalvo, Ph.D., on the plaza in front of Alumni Hall, the first (and for many years, only) building on campus.

On that day in 1889, the New Hampshire Legislature approved the incorporation of the Order of Saint Benedict of New Hampshire "for religious and charitable purposes, for the education of youth, for establishing churches and conducting services therein."

The founding president of Saint Anselm, Abbot Hilary Pfraengle, O.S.B., could not have envisioned the college that exists today. Alumni Hall is one of nearly 60 campus buildings, and the College is admired for its strong liberal arts curriculum; prestigious nursing program; New Hampshire Institute of Politics & Political Library, and strong community of service-oriented students and faculty.

The original Alumni Hall was almost completely destroyed by a fire in 1892, just as its construction was nearing completion; but it was almost immediately re-built by the College founding fathers and opened its doors to the first students in 1893. Dr. DiSalvo stated:

"This spirit of perseverance and optimism, especially in the face of adversity, characterizes Saint Anselm as a community, encompassing everyone who is a part of it, then and now...125 years from our founding charter, we are now and always, proud to be Anselmians."

The College community will celebrate throughout the academic year. Check the website for events, updates, history lessons, and opportunities to read and share Anselmian stories.
