The new main entrance to Saint Anselm College officially opened on December 13 with a ribbon cutting ceremony honoring Dr. and Mrs. Paul J. McNeil '46, after whom the gateway will be named.

Designed to provide a dramatic first impression, in the future this new entry point (located opposite College Road, east of the "old" main entrance) will also provide a symbolic introduction to the superior educational experience to which the college is committed.

"We were in desperate need of a main entrance that was more welcoming, and signifying the arrival into our academic community," said President Steven R. DiSalvo, Ph.D., during the ribbon cutting ceremony. "When you enter campus you will soon see in front of you the new Roger and Francine Jean Student Center Complex, which, once complete, will serve as a beacon for the future; and then you will turn and see an iconic historic building, Alumni Hall, that preserves the past. That is the moment, when you realize that Saint Anselm College is all about tradition, our mission and our history; but it's also about our growth and faith in the future."

This new and imposing gateway was made possible by a $650,000 unrestricted gift to the college from Dr. Paul and Maureen McNeil. In recognition of their generosity, the college decided to name the new entrance after Dr. McNeil, an active member of the Hilltop community since his time here as a student, when he participated in the King Edward Society, played golf, and served as Class President. The McNeils continue to attend many alumni events, maintaining close relationships with fellow alumni and the college. For more than ten years, they have funded the Dr. and Mrs. Paul McNeil Annual Scholarship, providing the means for new generations of deserving students to receive a Saint Anselm education.

The new main gateway will be known as the "Dr. Paul J. McNeil '46 College Entrance," and the ribbon officially opening it was cut by Dr. and Mrs. McNeil, Dr. DiSalvo and Father Mathias Durette, who also offered a blessing. The McNeils and their family members then became the first to drive through it, traveling via the Hawks Bus into campus.

Please note the following changes to the traffic flow on the upper campus, effective immediately:

  • The new main entrance will be "One Way" coming on to campus. Traffic will be allowed to go straight in front of Hillary Hall and turn right to travel towards Alumni Hall.
  • The roadway in front of Poisson Hall and the Library will change to "One Way" when travelling towards Alumni Hall.
  • A Stop Sign has been installed at the intersection in front of the Library. No Right turn permitted.
  • The former main entrance will continue to be "One Way" coming on campus.
  • However, traffic will have to Stop at the signs installed at the intersection by the Abbey Church and may only take a right turn.
  • Stop signs and directional signs have been installed.

Please follow the new traffic pattern and use caution.
