College Receives $2M for Ethics and Statewide Investor Education Programs

The Center for Public Responsibility and Corporate Citizenship Board has granted funding to Saint Anselm College and the University of New Hampshire and to develop and support expansion of governance and statewide investor education programs at each institution. The University of New Hampshire Foundation will manage these grants, which amount to about $2 million for Saint Anselm College and $5 million for UNH.

The Center for Public Responsibility and Corporate Citizenship was formed on July 10, 2003, to oversee and carry out the terms of a $5 million administrative consent agreement entered by the New Hampshire Securities Bureau and Tyco International on October 23, 2002. Invested by the State of New Hampshire, the money grew to approximately $7 million. The consent agreement required that the money fund a statewide investor education program, as well as ethics courses for the greater good.

Saint Anselm will develop an Ethics in Governance and Investor Education Program for the benefit of New Hampshire citizens, building upon the college's endowed chair, The Richard L. Bready Chair in Ethics, Economics, and the Common Good.

"We feel the corporate governance program at UNH and the investor education program at Saint Anselm College will fulfill the mission of the consent agreement. Ethical practices in corporate America should be a paramount consideration in educating future business leaders. The establishment of these programs is a major step to accomplishing that goal," stated Secretary of State Bill Gardner, Chairman of the Board.

The Saint Anselm program will serve to educate present and future leaders, inspire ethical practice and leadership, reinforce a statewide culture of sound governance, both public and private, and improve public understanding of how concern for ethical behavior benefits the common good.

The program will offer opportunities for community engagement, as well as online resources, including podcasts, videos and blog posts, featuring seminars and speakers on ethical practices, transparency and accountability in governing. The program will feature seminars and speakers addressing relevant issues of ethical practices, transparency and accountability in governing.

Saint Anselm and Jack Falvey, a frequent contributor to the Wall Street Journal and Barron's and adjunct faculty member at both the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and the Carroll School of Management at Boston College, will develop an open, online program to be delivered free of charge to the general public via email each business day. These emails will cover a variety of relevant investor education topics.

"At Saint Anselm College, ethics is an integral part of our curriculum and the development of our students. That is represented not only by our endowed chair, The Richard L. Bready Chair in Ethics, Economics, and the Common Good, but in what our students learn both inside and outside the classroom," said Father Jonathan DeFelice, O.S.B., president of Saint Anselm College.

"We are eager to expand our ethics in governance offerings by allowing for new programs to be designed specifically for present and future business leaders in our community."

Saint Anselm College politics professor, Dale Kuehne, Ph.D., said, "We welcome the opportunity to work with business and political leaders across the state to consider how we can teach and implement the highest standards and best practices for ethical governance."

The University of New Hampshire will develop the newly established Responsible Governance and Sustainable Citizenship Project (RGSCP). This initiative will promote ethics, citizenship, principled leadership, responsible governance and the creation of sustainable institutions at the University. It will provide opportunities for students and citizens of New Hampshire to learn how to be involved citizens and members of ethical, responsible, and productive communities, businesses and organizations by bringing the past into dialogue with the present in order to inform the future.
